Metaverse festival to unveil in Korea

SK Telecom, the biggest mobile provider in Korea, has successfully staged the world’s first live virtual concert to make use of volumetric image capture technology.

The Metaverse Music Festival has officially begun and will continue to take place in the Volumetric Concert Hall via SK’s Ifland metaverse platform from now until July 3rd. The festival begins at 8 p.m. each day.

The festival welcomes eight artists and an avatar female group, in addition to presenting live avatar performances and providing opportunities for fans to meet one another. Moreover, attendees will be able to get the most out of the event by roaming freely around the sphere-shaped hall in whatever direction they choose and by floating weightlessly in the air on flying skyboards during their time there.

SKT stated that they deployed volumetric technology during the Ifland Metaverse Music Festival. This technology concurrently captured 360-degree photographs of people using more than 100 cameras and created a three-dimensional image based on live action. “Because of this, the audience is able to view the K-Pop singer standing as tall as a structure.”

SKT is working on a project to merge metaverse technology with K-pop content aimed at Generation Z, and the festival is a part of that initiative

According to SKT, other volumetric concerts are scheduled to take place in August. The company demonstrated the material earlier this year at MWC 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.

The world’s first multi-day festival in the metaverse was introduced by the virtual blockchain-based world Decentraland in October of last year. Over the course of its four days and throughout its five stages, the Metaverse Festival presented the work of more than eighty prominent artists and personalities.

In addition, earlier this year, the promoter of Electric Daisy Carnival, Insomniac Events, formed a partnership with the industry-leading 3D platform Unity to work on a “whole new, persistent metaverse environment.”

The partnership, which will focus on expanding dance culture from the real world into the virtual one, will mix the vision and creativity of Insomniac with the cutting-edge technology of Unity. The partnership promises to create “the next generation of live entertainment.”
