We’re hoping that when people first play Ooblets they’ll see very clearly how it’s unique from any of its component inspirations. We’ve put a lot of ourselves into everything and over time it’s drifted more and more off into its own thing.” –Rebecca

Biomutant is a Swedish RPG From Experiment 101, It’s Out Now

Biomutant is a Swedish RPG From Experiment 101, It’s Out Now. The developers at Experiment 101, collaborating with the publishers at THQ Nordic, have built a great open world game. the game’s designer, Stefan Ljungqvist, has made an effort to create a vast landscape that engages the player in fantastical story line as well. The game is run on the Unreal Engine 4 and can be played on the Ps4, Ps5, and Windows as well. It is a single player action role playing game, and in the main article, we will be looking into the details of the game and get the developer’s perspective.

The Setting

This game utilizes a unique story telling device called “branching storylines” which uses the player’s decisions to affect different outcomes. The main plot basically follows the “Tree of Life,” which becomes polluted by an oil swell in a natural disaster that the player must rectify.

The branching root systems of the tree give life to all the different areas of the world. These roots become threatened by gnawing gnashing monsters that may destroy the tree before it recovers. The player must find a way to bring the six tribes together before the tree is destroyed, and the world too, forever.

The Reviewers Perspective

The world is 8×8 kilometers big, so 64 km². And we have different Biomes, such as an Archipelago, the Dead Zone, green grass lands, a desert and some frosty areas. The size of each biome is individual – some are a bit larger, some are a tad smaller, but they are all full of content for some hours of gameplay. As for traversal options: we offer many different ones, on land on air and on water. And it’s up to the player to find their favorite among them.” –Developer

The Reviewers Perspective

Like most anime-loving adults out there, I’m sure we can all recall the days of hitting up Suncoast and FYE for the latest VHS anime release you were saving all of your allowance for. For me, anime came into my life around when I was fresh off from drawing my favorite Marvel superheroes (usually Spiderman) and making my own little comics. That all shifted pretty abruptly when Pokémon and Toonami came around; I was passionate about creating characters from Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Outlaw Star. Bringing us to the present day, I wanted to share  my love of anime with my wife and stepson.” –Developer

Gerda: A Flame in Winter is Coming to PC and Console in 2022

Published

on

Gerda: A Flame in Winter is Coming to PC and Console in 2022. Set in an alternate World War II Europe, the player takes up the role of the character of Gerd, the titular character. It is a story-driven game, according to Nintendo, the developer along with PortaPlay. The publisher is Don’t Nod, responsible for such games as Life is Strange. It is a narrative, role-playing adventure game that weaves a vivid and engaging story for the player. In the main article we will be examining the content of the game as well as the developer perspective.

The Setting

As the game is set in a World War II Europe, the plot is incredibly harrowing and fast-paced. The main character is Gerda, a Danish citizen who must make increasingly complex and impactful decisions that lead her to travel all around the countryside avoiding the enemy.

“The story of GAFIW is inspired by the real life of Hans Von Knut’s grandmother (Hans is PortaPlay’s Game Director), who took part in the Danish Resistance during WW2. She shared her experiences and reflections with him, and those became the base for the conversation inside the studio that bloomed into GAFIW. We weren’t looking intentionally into WW2, but rather we felt that keeping the setting true to the actual history and location can bring a sense of specificity and authenticity.”

The Reviewers Perspective

The Artistic Direction is inspired by a period in Nordic impressionism, and specifically the Skagen Painters. The Danish countryside doesn’t have great mountains or grand architecture, but there is a special beauty to find in this flat, cold, and sparse world. The loneliness and expansiveness, the colors, and light of the north, the small cozy Danish villages, though under the pressure of the occupation, are one of a kind and full of atmosphere.” –Developer
