SIX Group had a mixed start to the year in terms of business growth, but it nevertheless generated more revenue as a result of its acquisition of the Madrid exchange Bolsas y Mercados Espaola (BME).

While the financial services provider maintained its gross operating profitability, net profit declined due to an unfavorable comparison base.

Zurich-based group’s sales rose 19.5% year-on-year to 850 million U.S. dollars, boosted by BME’s full contribution, acquired a year ago. The resulting revenue decrease, though, is 2.4% after removing this effect.

The contraction is mainly explained by a drop in volatility on the financial markets, whereas activity soared in the first half of 2020 following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, SIX reports a lower interest in trading Swiss shares, most of which are listed on the Zurich Stock Exchange, where it operates.

SIX is also involved in payment traffic, banking services, and financial information.

Earnings before interest and taxes (Ebit) fell by 29% to 210 million U.S. dollars, while gross operating profit (EBITDAL) jumped by almost half to 300 million U.S dollars. A lower contribution from participants, including Worldline, explains the difference between the two indicators. The company’s net profit fell by 41.3% to CHF 108.2 million.

The full financial year 2021 were not provided.
